During the past 17 years from 1958 to 1975, 27 cases of potentially curable causes of hypertension, which were 10 cases of pheochromocytoma, 8 cases renovascular hypertension. 5 cases Cushing& syndrome and 4 cases coractation of aorta, were experienced at the National Medical Center. And a clinical study was made regarding its incidences, diagnostic procedures and operative results with literatural reviews.
A. Pheochromocytoma
1) Of the 10 cases, 7 cases were male, 3 cases female and 2 cases were first decade, 5 cases second decade and 3 cases third decade.
2) Of the 10 cases, 8 cases were left side and 2 cases right side.
3) All cases showed positive response in regitine test and urinary VMA level was increased in 8 cases and IVP, aortography and retroperitoneal pneumography showed not always objective findings
but they were somewhat helpful in diagnosis.
4) All cases were underwent operation, resulted in 9 cases of good postoperative course and one operative table death which was demonstrated as one only malignant pheochromocytoma having distant. metastasis at autopsy findings.
B. Renovascular hypertension
1) Of the 8 cases. 7 cases were male, one case female and 6 cases in the middle age, the other 22 cases in child and old man.
2) Of the 8 cases, 4 cases were in left renal artery, 2 cases in Rt. and other 2 cases in both. 3) IVP and renal angiography were positive finding in 6 cases.
4) Of the 8 cases, only 4 cases were underwent operation, resulted in 3 cases of good postoperative course.
C. Cushing´s syndrome
1) Of the 5 cases, 1 case was male, 4 cases female and all cases were in the middle age.
2) Of the 5 cases, 3 cases were involved in both side and each 1 case was in Lt. and Rt.
3) ACTH stimulation test, Dexamethasone suppression test, IVP. aortography and retroperitoneal
pneumography were helpful in diagnosis.
4) All cases were underwent operation resulted in 4 cases of good postoperative course till 3 months later and one operative table death which was demonstrated as cancer origin of Cushing´s syndrome in the size of 15 X 10 X 10cm.
D. Coarctation of aorta
1) Of the 4 cases, 3 cases were male, 1 case female and one case 1st decade and other 3 cases 2nd decade.
2) On aortography, coarotation of aorta was demonstrated just distal to the orgin of the left Subclavian artery in all cases.
3) All cases were underwent operation, resulted in 3 cases of good postoperative and 1 case readmitted with dyspnea after 3 months later.
